The four kinds, and how each one is done

They differ in whether the design sits in the surface of the nail or on top of it, and that decides both how it looks and how it wears.

Painted art is brushwork on cured colour, then sealed under top coat. Because the sealer floods over it, the design ends up level with the rest of the nail and you cannot feel it with a fingertip. Fine detail is limited by nail length before it is limited by anything else.

Foil gel art does not use paint at all. A special tacky gel is laid down and cured to a precise stickiness, the foil is pressed face down onto it, and it is lifted away sharply so the metallic layer separates from its carrier film and stays behind. Coverage breaks up wherever the gel took unevenly, and that fractured, beaten-metal look is the point of it rather than a fault. It is sealed after.

3D art is sculpted on the nail from gel or acrylic and cured in place, so bows, hearts and blossoms stand off the surface with real height. It is the only one of the four you can feel.

Stones are set rather than stuck. Each one is pressed into a bead of gel which is then cured up around its base, so the gel grips the sides of the stone instead of relying on glue underneath. A stone simply glued to a flat surface is a stone that comes off in a coat pocket.

Charged by the finger

Nail art is priced per nail, and stones are counted individually by size. Ten plain nails with a design on two costs a fraction of ten designs.

3D art is charged per finger too, because a sculpted flower is a different piece of work from a painted line, and takes longer to build than the rest of the nail took to paint.

Who nail art suits

One or two accent nails suit anyone who wants more than a single flat colour without it running the whole hand. A full set of designs is an occasion decision: a wedding, a festival, a shoot.

Height is the trade-off worth understanding. Raised 3D work and larger stones stand proud of the nail, so they meet fabric, hair and pocket linings before the nail does, and they are the first thing to come away. Painted and foil work sit under the top coat and wear like the polish they are sealed into.

Bring reference pictures. A screenshot settles in seconds what a paragraph of description leaves open, and it lets a technician tell you before starting whether a design built for long stiletto nails will fit on short square ones.

What nail art costs

How long does it take?

Flat work takes 5 to 15 minutes per finger, whether it is painted or foil. Stones and 3D art run from 15 minutes per finger with no fixed ceiling, because a sculpted piece is built up in stages on the nail.

Detail is what moves a design within its range: the number of separate elements on one nail, how fine the linework is, and whether each layer has to be cured before the next can go over it. Add this to the time for the gel polish or the extensions underneath, which have to be finished before any art goes on.

How long does it last?

As long as whatever is underneath it, because it is sealed into the same top coat. On natural nails with gel polish that is 2 to 3 weeks. On extensions it is 3 to 4 weeks, and the art comes off with the set at the refill.

Raised work is the exception. 3D pieces and large stones sit above the surface where everything catches them, so treat those as the part of a design most likely to go first.

Yes. Book further ahead than you think you need for anything with a date on it, and bring pictures. For an elaborate set we would rather talk it through in advance than work it out on the day.

Will 3D art catch on things?

Yes, and that is worth knowing before you choose it. Anything sculpted stands off the nail, so it meets hair, knitwear and pocket linings first. If you want detail that survives a working week, painted or foil art under a top coat is the more practical answer.

Can you copy a design from Instagram?

Usually, within what your nail length and shape allow. Show us the picture first: a design built for long stiletto nails often needs adapting for short square ones, and that is better heard before we start than after.
