Nail overlays in Narsingi, Hyderabad
at The Nail Lounge by Aura & Armour
An overlay is a layer of gel or acrylic laid over your own nail, with nothing added past the fingertip. It is the service for nails that split, peel or bend so far they tear before they ever reach the length you wanted. Plain or with gel polish over the top, the work underneath is the same, and it is thickness placed exactly where the nail keeps giving way.
What we offer
An overlay is not an extension
The difference is length, and length is the whole of it. An extension builds a new nail out past your fingertip over a form or a glued-on tip. An overlay stops at the edge of the nail already there.
What it adds instead is thickness where the nail needs it. The product is built up slightly through the middle of the nail, over the stress point where the nail begins to curve away from the finger, so that a knock spreads across that arch rather than folding the nail at its weakest line. That shaping is the reason an overlay stops breakage, and it is the part a coat of polish cannot do.
Because nothing is added at the tip, the set grows out looking like your own nails, and it takes the day-to-day knocks that would otherwise split the free edge. For length, see nail extensions.
Gel or acrylic overlay
Both soak off, and neither is filed away. What separates them is how much they give under pressure.
Gel cures under a lamp and keeps some flex, which sits better on a thin or naturally bendy nail. A rigid coating on a nail that wants to move is a coating that lifts at the edges.
Acrylic hardens in air and sets harder. It is the sturdier of the two on nails that take real punishment, at the cost of that give.
Your technician decides between them by how your nail behaves when it is flexed, which takes a moment to check in person and cannot be judged from a message.
Who overlays suit
Nails that peel away in layers, split down the sidewalls, or bend far enough to tear before they clear the fingertip. If you keep filing a break back and starting again, that is the pattern an overlay interrupts.
They also suit nails coming off a long run of extensions, when your own nails feel thin and every edge catches. An overlay gives them a hard surface to grow out underneath instead of leaving them bare.
An overlay is not a medical treatment. If a nail is painful, lifting away from the bed, or discoloured in a way that is spreading, see a doctor first and book with us afterwards.
What overlays cost
Gel and acrylic are priced differently, and adding gel polish over the top changes the figure again, so we quote in person or on WhatsApp before starting rather than publishing a list. All prices are inclusive of 18% GST.
How long does it take?
A plain overlay takes 30 to 60 minutes. With gel polish over it, 45 to 75 minutes.
- Overlay (gel)30 to 60 minutes
- Overlay (acrylic)30 to 60 minutes
- Overlay (gel) + Gel Polish45 to 75 minutes
- Overlay (acrylic) + Gel Polish45 to 75 minutes
Gel and acrylic take much the same time. What moves the figure is the condition of the nails underneath: peeling layers have to be taken back to something sound before product goes on, or the overlay bonds to a flake that is already coming away.
How long does it last?
An overlay needs a refill every 2 to 3 weeks. It grows out with your nail, and the same thing ends the cycle as ends a set of extensions: a step forms at the base where the product stops and new growth begins.
The overlay itself does not wear out. Keeping to the refill cycle is what stops that step becoming a lifted edge with water sitting under it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an overlay and extensions?
An overlay adds strength without length; extensions add length. An overlay is applied over the nail you already have and finishes where that nail finishes, which is why it passes for a natural nail rather than a built one.
Will an overlay make my nails grow?
It does not change how fast they grow, but it usually gets you further. Most short nails are short because they keep breaking, not because they grow slowly, so protecting the free edge lets the length you were already growing stay on your hand.
Can I get an overlay on nails wrecked by old extensions?
Usually yes, and it is one of the most common reasons people book one. Let a technician look first. If a nail is sore, torn into the bed, or looks infected, we will tell you to leave it alone until it recovers.
Do I still need a refill with an overlay?
Yes. A refill rebalances the overlay so the join with new growth stays flush instead of becoming a ledge that catches and lifts.
Can I have colour on an overlay?
Yes. Overlay with gel polish is a single appointment, and any of the finishes can go over it, chrome and cat-eye included.
How is an overlay taken off?
By soaking, the same as any gel or acrylic. Book a removal instead of filing or picking it away, which is what thins the nail underneath.
